Anonymous asked: Why does Buddhism focus so much on suffering or why is suffering the base of Buddhism?

panatmansam:

Great question. Thank you.

Buddhism focuses on suffering because suffering is at the very core of the human condition. Enlightenment is the end of suffering. Nothing more. Nothing less. The Buddha saw the suffering of the world and saw that it was possible to end this suffering.

The word which is translated into English from Sanskrit as suffering is  dukkha . While all creatures may be said to suffer from illness, hunger or attacks by predators dukkha is a kind of suffering which is unique to human beings. Human beings can think abstractly. We suffer because we cannot accept change even though change is constant. We become attached to our life, our youth, our beauty, our health, our loved ones and our possessions and suffer when they are lost. We even suffer just thinking about the possibility that they will be lost even when we have them.

All such things are taken from us.

Enlightenment is not a sudden thing as most people suppose. Most of us learn to lose our attachments only gradually and as we do we gain in serenity, compassion and our capacity to love. Becoming an enlightened being does not mean that choirs of angels will sing or that we will see a burning sign in the sky. It means a transition from one state of being to another. It is spiritual evolution. All evolution is a raising of consciousness and 3.8 billion years of evolution has produced beings capable of transcending the material and moving to the next plane.

That of universal consciousness.

If you woke up tomorrow, and your internet looked like this, what would you do?

Imagine all your favorite websites taking forever to load, while you get annoying notifications from your ISP suggesting you switch to one of their approved “Fast Lane” sites.

Think about what we would lose: all the weird, alternative, interesting, and enlightening stuff that makes the Internet so much cooler than mainstream Cable TV. What if the only news sites you could reliably connect to were the ones that had deals with companies like Comcast and Verizon?

On September 10th, just a few days before the FCC’s comment deadline, public interest organizations are issuing an open, international call for websites and internet users to unite for an “Internet Slowdown” to show the world what the web would be like if Team Cable gets their way and trashes net neutrality. Net neutrality is hard to explain, so our hope is that this action will help SHOW the world what’s really at stake if we lose the open Internet.

If you’ve got a website, blog or tumblr, get the code to join the #InternetSlowdown here: https://battleforthenet.com/sept10th

Everyone else, here’s a quick list of things you can do to help spread the word about the slowdown: http://tumblr.fightforthefuture.org/post/96020972118/be-a-part-of-the-great-internet-slowdown
